Why Is the Fate Series So Confusing?

Fate started as a visual novel with three separate routes โ€” each telling a different story with the same characters. Multiple studios adapted different routes at different times. Add spin-offs, prequels, alternate universes, and a massive mobile game โ€” and you have one of anime's most sprawling franchises.

๐Ÿ’ก Short Answer

Start with Fate/Zero for a serious, mature tone โ€” or jump to Fate/stay night: UBW for the classic entry. Both are excellent.

The Three VN Routes

  • Fate Route โ€” Saber-focused. 2006 DEEN anime (outdated). Most skip it.
  • Unlimited Blade Works โ€” Emiya's ideals clash with reality. Best adapted by ufotable (2014).
  • Heaven's Feel โ€” Dark and emotionally devastating. Ufotable's trilogy is a masterpiece.
