In Chainsaw Man, Devils are born from human fears. The stronger the fear associated with a concept, the more powerful its Devil. Devils can form contracts with humans, possess corpses to become Fiends, or merge with humans to create Hybrids like Denji.

How Devils Work

Every fear humans have creates a Devil — from the Gun Devil born from fear of guns to the Darkness Devil born from humanity's primal fear of the dark. Devils are immortal in a sense: when killed on Earth they resurrect in Hell, and when killed in Hell they resurrect on Earth. They are a closed loop of violence and rebirth.

Devil Power Hierarchy

Devil power scales directly with how much humanity fears the concept they embody. The most feared concepts produce the most catastrophically powerful devils:

Primal Fears (Top Tier)

Darkness Devil, Falling Devil — born from fears so ancient and universal they predate human civilization. Never fully defeated.

Concept Devils (High Tier)

Gun Devil (fear of gun violence), Death Devil, War Devil — embodiments of humanity's most widespread modern fears.

Named Devils (Mid Tier)

Bat Devil, Leech Devil, Spider Devil — powerful enough to threaten Devil Hunters but can be killed by skilled humans.

Fiends (Lower Tier)

Corpse-possessing devils — reduced power compared to their full form but more stable and able to blend into society.

The Chainsaw Devil — Pochita Explained

Pochita / The Chainsaw Devil is unique among all devils. It is feared by other devils — not by humans. The Chainsaw Devil can eat other devils and erase them from existence: any devil eaten by Chainsaw Man is forgotten by humanity entirely, meaning their concept disappears and they can never be reborn. This makes Pochita the most feared being in Hell. The Gun Devil, War Devil and others all fear and scheme against the Chainsaw Devil specifically.

Public Safety Devil Hunters

The Japanese government employs Devil Hunters to manage devil threats. Division 4, led by Makima, handles Special Grade threats. Hunters form contracts with devils to fight other devils — an arms race of supernatural weaponry that costs them pieces of themselves with every fight.
