Alchemy in FMA is governed by the Law of Equivalent Exchange: to obtain something, something of equal value must be given. Alchemists transmute matter by understanding its structure, deconstructing it, and rebuilding it into something new.

The Three Steps of Transmutation

1. Comprehension

Understanding the makeup and properties of the material you want to transmute. Without knowledge of what something IS, you cannot change it.

2. Deconstruction

Breaking down the material into its base components using alchemical energy drawn from the earth's tectonic activity.

3. Reconstruction

Rebuilding the deconstructed material into a new form according to the alchemist's design.

Transmutation Circles

Most alchemists require a drawn Transmutation Circle to perform alchemy โ€” a geometric diagram that focuses alchemical energy and defines the nature of the transmutation. The circle must match the intended transformation. Different circles produce different results.

Exception โ€” The Elric Brothers: After passing through the Gate of Truth, Edward and Alphonse can perform alchemy without drawing a circle โ€” they can clap their hands (Edward) or simply touch (Alphonse) to transmute. This is because they've seen the Truth directly.

The Law of Equivalent Exchange

The central rule of alchemy โ€” and the thematic spine of the entire series. You cannot create something from nothing. Every transmutation requires an equivalent sacrifice. The series constantly interrogates this rule: the Philosopher's Stone seems to break it, but in reality it merely defers the cost by using human souls as fuel.

Human Transmutation โ€” The Taboo

Attempting to resurrect or create a human being is the greatest taboo in alchemy. The Law of Equivalent Exchange demands a price the human body cannot pay โ€” the Gate of Truth takes something from the alchemist as the "toll." Edward lost his right arm and left leg. Alphonse lost his entire body. Their mother's attempted resurrection produced a failed creature that died within days.

Philosopher's Stone

A red stone that amplifies alchemy beyond normal limits โ€” appearing to bypass Equivalent Exchange. In reality it stores hundreds of human souls that absorb the cost of transmutations. Father, the main villain, constructs massive Philosopher's Stones using entire populations. The Homunculi each have a small stone in their bodies granting regeneration and power.

Alkahestry โ€” Xingese Alchemy

Alkahestry is the Eastern equivalent of alchemy, practiced in Xing. It draws energy from the Dragon's Pulse โ€” the flow of energy through the earth โ€” rather than tectonic pressure. This means it can be performed at range (alchemy requires direct contact with the material). May Chang and Lan Fan use Alkahestry-based fighting techniques.
