In Black Clover, magic comes from Mana — life energy present in all living things. Each person has a unique Magic Attribute (element or ability) determined at birth. Asta has zero mana and instead wields Anti-Magic — a force that nullifies all spells.
The 5 Magic Types

Anti-Magic — Asta's Power Explained
Asta's Anti-Magic is the conceptual opposite of all magic. It cannot be blocked, redirected, or absorbed by magical means because it literally cancels the mana that makes spells function. His devil Liebe is the source — a devil born with no magic who was given Anti-Magic as a result.
Demon-Slayer Sword
Absorbs Anti-Magic and releases it on contact. Dispels any spell it touches. Asta's first and most iconic weapon.
Demon-Dweller Sword
Can shoot Anti-Magic projectiles and borrow magic from allies to amplify swings. More versatile than the Slayer.
Demon-Destroyer Sword
Can erase the lingering effects of magic — counters healing, undoes reinforcement magic. Unique ability among the swords.
Demon-Slasher Katana
Yami's grimoire sword that Asta borrows. Cuts through space itself using Dark Magic amplified by Anti-Magic.
Ki — Black Clover's Sixth Sense
Ki is a combat technique taught to Asta by Yami. It's the ability to sense the life energy (mana) of opponents and react to their intentions before they move — effectively a precognitive combat sense. It's why Asta can fight mages despite having no magic himself: he reads their Ki instead of their spells.
Grimoires — The Magic Books
At age 15, every magic user receives a Grimoire — a book that records and amplifies their spells. The rarity of the clover on the cover indicates power level. A four-leaf clover grimoire is extraordinarily rare. Asta has a five-leaf clover (a Black Clover) — which is the grimoire of a devil.
